Toyota better be ready. With the turn of the year is the impending equinox. It is that time of year when the sun crosses the equator to give all sides of the world an equal time under the sun. For folk at Chevrolet, that is the time of year when payback is expected as it continues its performance renaissance with the Equinox Sport.

Set to break cover at the North American International Auto Show in January, the Equinox Sport marked the first time that Chevrolet foregoes of the Super Sport badge on its sport car, which analysts said was a move to clear the Equinox of what SS may stand for.

For the Equinox Sport, Chevrolet adds a 3.6-liter 263-hp V6 and a performance exhaust system for a whopping 42-percent power jump over the previous range of its LT version. The Equinox Sport also gets a new six-speed automatic with Tap Shift. Ride height is lower and suspension tuning stiffened for increase handling responsiveness.

Styling features include exclusive body-colored front and rear fascias and 18-inch wheels. Chevrolet also chops off the roof rails and rack for a sleeker look on the Sport. Equinox Sport goes on sale in the third-quarter of 2007 as a 2008 model.
