3-Way Chevy Cobalt Fights For NHRA Pro FWD Championship

Marty Ladwig, Jason Hunt and Gary Gardella, all from team Chevy, will return to Indy to fight for the National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) Pro FWD Championship. Chevy fanatics will sure have a dose of thrilling drag racing…

Motorsport.com earlier reported that the NHRA Sport Compact made its second visit of the year to O’ Reilly Raceway Park for the 53rd annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. The visit marked the very first time that the Pro FWD category has competed at the Labor Day Classic. It also has etched the importance of grabbing another chance for the trio of Chevy Cobalt drivers to vie for the most-coveted 2007 Xplod Championship. To add up to the excitement is the fact that there are only 4 races left on the calendar.

Ladwig
Marty Ladwig, who leads the standings in the NHRA Pro FWD standings, has this to say about the upcoming competition:

“It will take consistency to win the championship and having all of our parts ready to make changes when we have to. These cars are very finicky, using brand-new technology, and we have to have things made that aren’t readily available. We use very strong axels, the tires are different, the transmissions are different, the setups are different - very little that applies in rear-wheel-drive drag racing applies to our cars. Everybody is learning something new every race and the performance jumps up at every event."

Hunt
Jason Hunt, another point leader in the team Chevy, is hoping to win his first NHRA Pro FWD title. So far, Hunt has the most victories this year in the category and that gave GM racing another reason to be jubilant.

"After our last race here we need to make up some points," said Hunt. "We had a nice tune-up in Budds Creek (Md.) last weekend where we were just trying some new things on the car. We ran some great e.t. there, but something tells me it’s going to take a little more if you want to win the U.S. Nationals. We can’t wait for that first run down the track."

Gardella
With his win Pro FWD win two weeks ago at O’Reilly Raceway, Gary Gardella became more than a wild card in the Xplod Championship chase, and now the Team Chevy driver finds himself entrenched in a three-way, red bowtie battle with Ladwig and Hunt.

"We needed that win at Indy to stay in the race," said Gardella. "The guys have done a really good job getting a handle on this Red Bull Chevy Cobalt. It took us a little longer than we had hoped to get it figured out, but right now, it’s the best car I’ve ever had with unbelievable horsepower and incredible aerodynamics. We have four races to make up a 100-point deficit with Marty, and going back-to-back at Indianapolis would go a long way toward making that happen. Plus, who doesn’t want to be the first Pro FWD driver to win the U.S. Nationals?"

Street Versus Track: The Comparison

I am sure that you know that Chevy has a team competing at the Nextel Cup Series. And I am also sure that you know that the Impala is the selected machine by Chevy to compete in the very popular stock car racing. And I am also sure that some of you are wondering just what is the difference between the road-bound Impala and the track-bound car. Aside from the fact that the Impala car used in NASCAR races are covered with sponsor decals and has no headlights, there are a lot of things that vary between these two Impalas.

The engine, for example, is different. This should not be surprising since the Impala for NASCAR races is employing an engine that should be much more powerful than its production version. The Impala SS uses a 5.3-liter small-block V8 engine. In comparison, the Impala NASCAR uses a race-prepped 5.7-liter V8 unit. The 5.3-liter engine used by the road-bound Impala produces as much as 303 horsepower at 5,600 revs per minute. The Impala NASCAR, on the other hand, produces an astounding 825 hp at 8,500 rpm. As far as the puling power is concerned, the Impala SS’ engine produces as much as 323 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm while the track-bound Impala’s engine produces as much as 525 lb-ft at 7,500 rpm.

Plenty of differences right there eh? But the powerplant is not the only thing that these two Impalas differ in. The tranny that they are using is also different. The production Impala uses a Hydra-Matic HD four-speed automatic transmission while the racing Impala, for better performance uses a race-prepped four-speed manual transmission. The two Impalas also differ in length although the difference is just an inch or two. The entire length of the street Impala is 200.4 inches while the track Impala measures only 198.2 inches. The wheelbase is also different. While the Impala SS’ wheelbase measures 110.5 inches, the Impala NASCAR measures 0.5 inches less at 110.0 inches.

As for the weight, the Chevy Impala driven by superstars like Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. weighs about 3,400.0 lbs without the driver. This is significantly less than the weight of the Impala SS which weighs about 3,790 lbs. The wheels that these cars use are also different. The factory wheels that come with the street Impala are 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. The NASCAR Impala meanwhile uses 15-x9.5-inch steel race wheels which is designed to take on the demands of high speed racing.

Chevrolet Cars for South-East Asia

Equipped with sophisticated features, Chevrolet cars are predicted to be in demand in several places around the globe.  A while ago, I have learned about a bit of news from biz.thestar.com.my.  They say that DRB-HICOM Bhd and General Motors Asia Pacific Holdings (GM) are expecting to have 2,000 Chevrolets sold by the end of the year.  It will be accomplished with by their joint-venture company, HICOM-Chevrolet Sdn Bhd.

The Chevrolet Aveo Notchback, HICOM-Chevrolet’s first product, shall be the one to strengthen the company’s name and will eventually cause the abundance in sales.  That was according to Datuk Mohd Khamil Jamil, the DRB-HICOM group’s managing director.  He said, “DRB-HICOM stands to gain from the wealth of expertise and experience FM brings to the table as our partner. And, together with DRB-HICOM’s keen knowledge of the local market, we are confident of turning Chevrolet into a serious player in the passenger car segment in Malaysia.” This was his statement upon signing the joint-venture agreement with the president of GM South-East Asia operations, GM Thailand and Chevrolet sales Thailand, Stephen Carlisle.  With this model, they are confident that they will gain the interest of young customers and they will be able to capture the upcoming executive market, of which both are a good population to focus onto.

Furthermore, Khamil said, “The partnership would also explore the establishment of a local assembly programme and a manufacturing hub in Malaysia for the production of Chevrolet vehicles, parts and accessories for the Asean market.”

According to Carlisle, GM will have a major presence in Malaysia in their collaboration.  And, it is a good thing knowing that the country is a key member of the Asean community.  It is also the largest market for passenger cars around South East Asia.

The Chevrolet Aveo Notchback has been priced at RM 69,888.  That is without insurance.  But, it offers a three-year warranty or 100,000 km of mileage (whichever goes first).  With such reasonable price, Khamil said, “Priced more competitively than other models in its category, the Aveo Notchback is ideal for those looking for an affordable ride while maintaining a modern design and style with a spacious interior.”  That being said justified their potential sales hike.

Well, let us just wait for that moment.  There are only four months before we will be able to know the results of this venture.  For now, I believe they could probably make it.

Program A Keyless Entry To Your Chevrolet Silverado

I visited Chevy’s showroom last week right after I shopped for a couple of VW headlights.  I was just checking out the best deals they have in their selection. The dealer went after me and he showed me the latest model of the Chevy Silverado. He was obliged to provide me the details, specs and features of the pickup and it went well. I realized how great the Silverado is.

One of the standard features of the 2007 Silverado is the Keyless Entry. Before you get to seize this awesome ride, you should first program its keyless entry. In case you’re planning to buy a Silverado, here’s the steps on how to go about this task. Programming a keyless entry to a Silverado is so easy. Check this out!

2. Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.
3. Push and hold the DOOR unlock switch.
4. Set the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF while holding the DOOR lock switch in the unlock location.
5. Release go of the DOOR unlock knob. The doors will lock and unlock to verify the program mode.
6. Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one keyless remote. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.
7. Once again, repeat the previous instruction to program up to four transmitters.
8. With one more click forward, turn the ignition switch to the RUN place in order to go out from the keyless entry transmitter mode.
9. Control the transmitter functions in order to confirm the right system operation.

Corvettes Converge

The Chevrolet Corvette is considered as an American icon. No other car can replace the Corvette in the heart of American sports car enthusiasts. The first of these legendary cars came out of Chevy’s assembly plant in Flint, Michigan in 1953. More than 50 years later, the Corvette is still one of the most loved cars by Americans. As Dave Walter of Cumberland valley Corvette Club puts it, "It’s the best sports car you can buy for the amount of money you spend."

Numerous Corvettes will be converging at the Carlisle Fairgrounds to a large-scale car show that more than half a million people will attend. Although the Carlisle Events is a place where fans can see showcased customized trucks and motorcycles from manufacturers such as General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, the Corvette from General Motors is considered as the star of the show. The Corvettes at Carlisle will be held on its 26th year this weekend. The vent will start with the traditional Corvette parade through downtown Carlisle. This gathering of Corvettes at Carlisle is considered by the National Corvette Museum as "the marque’s premier national event."

The event was founded by Chip Miller along with his friend Bill Miller. Son Lance is also a Corvette lover and now the events manger for Carlisle Events. "My father was literally sitting on a curb when he found a Corvette magazine, and he just fell in love with them," said Lance.

Lance owns a lot of Corvettes. And I mean a lot. He has a Corvette driven by the legendary Dale Earnhardt just two weeks after his fatal accident at the Daytona 500. The said car is a yellow Corvette and is race-prepped. Not only does the car look stunning, it also has the distinction of being the only race car that was driven by both Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Lance has this to say about the car. "The sound of the engine is almost scary."

Lance also owns a 1953 Corvette with just 9,200 miles on the odometer. This is the lowest known mileage for a Corvette made for the 1953 model year. He also has a 1960 Corvette which was the first Corvette to win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Some of Lance’s ‘Vettes will be showcased during the event. At the parade, Lance and his wife will be driving in a 2007 Corvette.

Battery For A Chevy

The race is on. I am not referring to the NASCAR Nextel Cup where Chevy drivers are dominating the entire field. What I’m referring to is the race to become the first automaker to mass produce a practical PHEV. And General Motors with the Chevy Volt looks to be leading the race especially now that the automaker has found an ally in A123Systems Inc. - a world leader in the development and production of Li-ion batteries.

What’s so special about Li-ion batteries you ask? The reason is that the Li-ion is far more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride batteries that hybrid cars today are using. A Li-ion battery pack is lighter than its Ni-MH counterpart. If you take that into consideration, it would mean that a small Li-ion battery will have the same output as a much larger Ni-MH battery. This means that on small cars, the interior space will not be cannibalized by the battery pack, if it is a Li-ion one. On large cars, automakers can use larger and more powerful Li-ion batteries and interior space will not be compromised.

The only problem is that current Li-ion battery making technology is not yet adapted to automotive application. The constant vibration of a vehicle in motion can seriously affect a fragile Li-ion battery which can result to an explosion. So with the A123Systems on their side, General Motors is looking to create the first Li-ion battery suited for automotive application.

As can be expected, the Volt will be the beneficiary of this partnership. I can say that the Volt is one good looking car and I am looking forward to seeing or even owning one. So this partnership between the two giant companies heightens the anticipation for the Volt.

Bob Lutz, General Motors’s vice chairman, said: “Breakthrough battery technology will drive future automotive propulsion, and the company that aligns with the best strategic partners will win. That’s what is so important about this deal. Whether you’re talking about the Chevy Volt, a fuel cell or even a plug-in hybrid such as our planned Saturn Vue, we need to understand the fundamental battery cell performance.”

“The Chevy Volt will lead the automotive industry in a new direction. We see a future where vehicles run on electricity and are equipped with clever ways of making electricity on board, making us less dependent on gasoline. It’s the next great paradigm shift in our industry, an opportunity largely due to the rapid advancement in battery cell technology by companies such as A123Systems and LG Chem.”

Childress and Chevrolet Deal Renewed

Last Saturday, it was announced that Richard Childress (the president and CEL of Richard Childress Racing) renewed their contract with General Motors in their continuous partnership with the Chevrolet team for 2008 and beyond.

As for the background, the Richard Childress Racing has been the longest running team for Chevrolet in NASCAR.  They have won approximately greater than 160 races.  Aside from that, RCR gained 10 championships between the Nextel Cup, Craftsman Truck Series and the Busch Series.  Moreover, they were the very first to gain the title in all three divisions.  They even won the Nextel Cup six times with Dale Earnhardt.

As based from paddocktalk.com, Ed Peper, the Chevrolet general manager, said, “We’ve really got great news at Chevrolet about our continuing partnership with one of NASCAR’s premier teams. We have had the winningest name in racing with over 600 Cup victories and we really look to match up with teams that share our values and most importantly want to win on the race track. It’s my pleasure in that vein to announce that Richard Childress Racing will remain a key partner with the Chevrolet and GM Racing family for 2008 and beyond.”

It was in 1994 when RCR last won the Nextel Cup.  It is quite long that they haven’t achieved the title.  But, currently, they have three drivers in position, which will be making up the contenders for the Chase for the Cup.  These are: Jeff Burton (ranked sixth), Clint Bowyer (ranked ninth), and Kevin Harvick (ranked tenth).

Peper also said, “We are very excited to continue a long and very successful relationship with one of the best racing organizations in NASCAR both on and off the track. Richard had a choice and he and his team chose Chevrolet. And just like so many Americans who have made Chevrolet the number one selling brand in America, it is a partnership that will bolster our standing as the winningest name in racing and we are very, very proud of these guys.”

Overwhelmed, Childress said, “It’s quite an honor to be back with Chevrolet. I started with Chevrolet way before we were incorporated in 1969. I’ve always been Chevrolet. There was a couple years we got off and came right back, although it was a GM product. It’s just been a great relationship. What a great company to give us support with engineering, technology, the parts and pieces it took to win those races. Without GM we couldn’t have won those races and the technology they gave us just like the new Impala that we’re going to be racing.”

General Motors has gained their trust to bring out the best just for their racing cars.  They would not be putting in a Chevrolet pickup light kit but they would be using the right kind of stuff that will bring the team to success.

Richard Childress is aiming to have an additional team and make it to the fourth spot in the Nextel Cup by next year.  He is in selection between JJ Yeley (who is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing) and Scotsman Dario Franchitti (Indy 500 winner).  His decision shall be expected next month.

I hope they would be able to gain good results in their plans.  I just wish they have the right amount of luck this time.

Chevrolet In Woodward Dream Cruise

The most anticipated event of all car enthusiasts is all happening right now! The Woodward Dream Cruise was launched last August 18, 2007 in Woodward and Old Woodward Birmingham, Detroit. All the best cars are on display during this once a year event which is currently celebrating its 6th year of continuous exhibition of the best things that the auto industry has to offer.

One of the participating companies is GM’s Chevrolet. The 260-horsepower 2008 HHR SS that will hit the market later this year is on Chevrolet’s featured exhibit at Woodward and Woodward in Birmingham Detroit. The Chevrolet HHR SS has a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour. It took the challenge at a difficult road course at Germany’s famous Nurburgring with an 8 minutes and 46 seconds record.

From the article that I read from the Detroit Free Press, Mark Phelan said, “The music may not be about cars, but the musicians will be when the Exhaust Tones take the stage for a brief set of full-throttle rock and roll at the New Way Bar on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale tonight. The Exhaust Tones consists primarily of leading automotive journalists and public relations executives.”

“They’re pretty good for a band that’s been nominated for more Pulitzer Prizes than Grammy Awards, but they’ll only be onstage for 30 minutes or so. The set should begin shortly after 9:30 p.m., which coincidentally, is probably the last time you’ll be able to find parking in downtown Ferndale this weekend.”

“The New Way Bar is located at 23130 Woodward Ave. between 9 Mile Road and I-696. The classic 1957 Chevrolet seems to be more common on Woodward this week than when it was new, but racing mogul Richard Childress brought what may be the rarest of all for a brief public appearance as the brand unveiled its new 2008 HHR SS sport wagon,” added Phelan.

They will take a ride in cars that is owned by the Woodward Tri-Five Cruisers in a parade lap before the Michigan 400 race at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

With Chevrolet and all the brightest auto brands in the industry today, everybody will surely enjoy the Woodward Dream Cruise this year just like the previous events that started six years ago. It’s not just featuring the best old and new quality cars that made a big impact in the industry - it’s about the union of these giant auto makers for the benefit of other people. It surely has been making every one of all those enthusiasts happy even though such an event only happens once in a year!

The Chevy Silverado Is The Ultimate Truck

The Chevy Silverado… There are a lot of remarks that can describe this sturdy and classy pickup truck! For so many years, the Silverado’s appeal has never faded and in fact, it has built a reputation that can never be crushed by any fierce rival… It is the all-time ultimate truck of the planet and proof of that is very obvious! It isn’t really a surprise anymore like the popping up of a Mercedes hood with the best power performance engine!

When I visited MotorTrend.com, there were reviews about the Chevy Silverado and I gladly browsed through them all! Here’s one of the facts I’ve learned from my research: the Consumer Automotive Group, has announced that the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado is its 2007 Truck of the Year(TM). The complete report on Motor Trend’s 2007 Truck of the Year was be published in the February issue, which has been made available on newsstands last January 2, 2007… wow! Actually, I am so familiar with the achievements earned by the Silverado; but this one? I sure missed it! But good thing is, now I know! The Silverado continuous to impress the world!

Here are some statements about the Silverado from the updates I’ve read, "The Silverado impressed us most of all because it is a great reworking of an iconic American vehicle. The Chevy pick up truck has been a part of the American automotive landscape for decades. This Silverado takes it into the twenty-first century." This is according to Angus MacKenzie, the editor in chief of Motor Trend.

MacKenzie added, "The Silverado offers traditional values people want in a pick-up - it’s rugged, durable and versatile, but it’s also stylish and comfortable. GM has done a good job in understanding that these trucks are not just for work but also for recreation, and it’s done a great job in maintaining the Silverado’s reputation for value - prices have only increased about $300 on most models."

Today the ultimate truck has swept its rivals in the recent IntelliChoice.com Best Deals for the month of August 2007! The Silverado has dominated almost all the awards in various pickup truck segments respectively.

“The Chevy Silverado continues to show well in the face of stiff competition from Toyota, Dodge and Ford, and the timing is great for truck buyers as the market enters 2007 model close-out season. Also, it’s rare to see two automakers dominate the list in such a way. With the Corvette and Silverado, the Chevrolet brand carries seven segments, as many as Toyota, and the two automakers combined account for 23 of our 33 overall segments for August,” says James Bell, the publisher of IntelliChoice.com.
