Lithium-Ion Battery Cell for Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet concept car is one of the revolutionary concepts from Chevrolet! Everyone (or should I say ‘the world’ instead) has had their eyes and attention laid off to the progress of the Volt! I mean, everybody is in great anticipation and we all can’t wait until the Volt comes into production!

So what’s the latest development about the Chevy Volt? Good thing I’ve read the latest updates on TheAutoChannel.com and I got the best updates that I am very much willing to share with you! Hold on to your brakes Canada because here I go… According to the article, General Motors Corp. is in partnership with A123Systems, Inc. and they will join forces to enhance cells with A123Syystem’s nanophosphate battery chemistry for an durable, long-lasting, powerful and safe battery to be used in the electric drive E-Flex system. The agreement between the two giant companies is projected to further accelerate the development of the batteries for E-Flex architecture’s electric plug-in vehicles and fuel cell alternatives.

"Breakthrough battery technology will drive future automotive propulsion, and the company that aligns with the best strategic partners will win. That’s what is so important about this deal. Whether you’re talking about the Chevy Volt, a fuel cell or even a plug-in hybrid such as our planned Saturn Vue, we need to understand the fundamental battery cell performance,” said Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman of Global Product Development.

Earlier this year, the ground-breaking electric vehicle architecture by the E-Flex was first exhibited in the Chevy Volt concept car. The Volt is perfect for the average commuters that are expected to run just about 40 miles! There’s no need to stop by a gasoline station just to fill her up - the Volt can run without gasoline and the best thing is that the Volt produces zero emissions!

"The Chevy Volt will lead the automotive industry in a new direction,” Lutz said. “We see a future where vehicles run on electricity and are equipped with clever ways of making electricity on board, making us less dependent on gasoline. It’s the next great paradigm shift in our industry, an opportunity largely due to the rapid advancement in battery cell technology by companies such as A123Systems and LG Chem.”

"A123Systems and LG Chem are both top-tier battery suppliers, with proven technologies. We’re confident one, or possibly both of these companies’ solutions will meet our battery requirements for the E-Flex system,” said Denise Gray, the director of GM’s Energy Storage Devices and Strategies.

“We’re talking today about the Volt and implications that it will have on the electrification of passenger vehicles, but the technology goes a lot further than that,” Vieau said. “The weight, size, safety and performance of these batteries have implications on all transportation, including hybrid buses, trucks and aircraft.”
