Three Straight For Stewart

Chevrolet is on a roll in the Nextel Cup once again. At the start of the season, Chevy drivers have been dominating almost every race. Then halfway through the season, Ford showed signs of resurgence and so did Dodge with the latter now having two wins. But in the last four races, a Chevrolet driver has stood up to the challenge mounted by non-Chevy teams. Three of the last four races has been won by a Chevy driver and that man is no other than the two-time NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart.

Stewarts’ latest victory came at the Centurion Boats at The Glen event. The win came in dramatic fashion as Stewart took the victory in a come-from-behind effort. Early on, Stewart’s car which I might say is looking mighty fine that a Chevy pickup with a pickup ground effects will pale in comparison leads the race until the 44th lap. During that lap, Stewart kinda looses control of the car which allowed championship leader Jeff Gordon to take the lead. But Gordon will lose it the same way that he got it. With only a lap remaining, Gordon would spin out enabling Stewart to take the lead and the win.

After the race, Stewart has this to say: “Jeff lost it the same way I lost it. had to keep fighting back. I kept the pressure on Jeff hoping he made a mistake and he did. I just had more time to make up for my spin. I was probably the most shocked person to see that happen. He’s won here and won 4 championships; it was tricky in turn one.”

Gordon, on the other hand, is furious that he let down his team. His sentiments after the race goes like this: “Pretty much the same thing that happened to Tony earlier in the race in the braking zone getting into turn one. Just stupid. I knew I had to push, Tony was really good. I wanted that win really bad. Points don’t mean anything. I pushed and I pushed too far. What happened is the team deserved to win and the driver didn’t get it done.”

The race also saw two drivers getting on each other’s nerve. Juan Pablo Montoya and Kevin Harvick almost came to blows after Montoya slammed his car on Harvick’s. To Montoya’s credit, he was tapped from behind by Martin Truex Jr. That little tap sent him towards Harvick who think that Montoya was once again playing bumper car.
