’57 Chevy In Original Hues

Car models and colors do have renaissance and reincarnation. As a fact, recently a media outfit has found a 1957 Chevy in its original hues.

KansasCity.com has found the reincarnation of the ’57 Chevy in its refreshing turquoise and white hues. Let’s pore over the details…

Owner: Wayne Aue
Profession: Retired
Vehicle: 1957 Chevrolet, 210 4-door hardtop

Here’s an excerpt from the media outfit’s interview with Wayne:

Q: Why is your car special?

A: It was made in California and all California Chevys had a one-piece front bumper. There were only 16,000 California ’57 Chevy 210 4-door hardtops made.

Q: What was your greatest challenge?

A: The biggest challenge was changing the motor from a six-cylinder to an eight-cylinder.

Q: How long have you owned it?

A: I’ve owned it for over 40 years. I purchased it from a business owner in Mission.

Q: Are there other cars you’d like to own?

A: At this point in my life, this car is the ideal driver for my wife and me. However, we previously owned a 1934 Chevrolet Sedan, an all-steel-body car we named “Blossom.” We sold it a number of years ago, and out of all the old cars I have owned, I do wish I had Blossom back. I also owned a 1927 Ford Roadster, all steel, and after selling Blossom, I had a 1934 Chevy Coupe. I bought the ’27 Ford Roadster from the same person who sold me my ’57 Chevy.

This roadster was disassembled in a cardboard box. Again, I assembled the entire car and had it professionally painted.

The 1934 Chevy Coupe I bought as an all-fiberglass body and assembled that car, as well, and had it professionally painted.

Q: Anything more about your ’57 Chevy?

A: It’s now Chevy turquoise and white, but was professionally painted this year after being painted black for many years.

Q: Do you belong to a car club?

A: We are members of Interstate Street Rods Car Club and have been since 1987. We go to many car shows and cruise nights and have many plaques and trophies earned from these shows.

Despite overwhelming auto options, Wayne wants to keep his old road ally. Good thing car buffs know their thing!

It’s nice to see old cars functioning efficiently as modern cars thanks to the cutting-edge technology. Now the thing of the past may be brought to the present… or perhaps pushed a little further to the future…

Old Chevy: How Did Aldo Find His Thing Of Beauty?

The way Aldo McCoy narrates the story, it sounds like he was there when an old Chevy broke down on the circle in Elizabeth in 1972. But he was only five years old then…

Aldo has just heard the story several times. At the time the story happened, he isn’t even familiar with “Speedy.”

So who’s Speedy?

The Asbury Park Press has this to say: “Speedy is the owner of that old 1962 Chevy Bel Air. They call him Speedy because he’s 69 years old and he still lays rubber when he leaves the parking lot in front of Aldo’s shop on Route 88. This would be consistent with the motto there at Redline Performance USA — Life’s Short, Drive Fast.”

Speedy also goes by George McCoy, no relation. Aldo and George used to live in the same neighborhood in Jackson, that’s all. George McCoy, who came to the United States from Honduras in 1955, is of Scottish descent, Aldo said.

Aldo narrates:  “The copperhead gold Chevy Bel Air with the 327 under the hood was his favorite car, his pride and joy. He was always talking about that car. Then one day in 1972 he was on his way to work and the car broke down. The guy at the gas station in Elizabeth told Speedy it was hopeless, the car was dead, and offered him $25 for the carcass.”

"It conked out a few times and started overheating," he recalled. "It stopped. It didn’t want to go any farther." Speedy took the money. Later, he entertained hesitations. But when he went back to the station that night, the car was already gone.

Enter Aldo McCoy, not a relative. He restores old cars for a living. “He’s been working on cars since he was 8 years old,” he said. “He rebuilt his first engine when he was ten in a 1962 Corvette. He was the manager of an auto parts store when he was just 17.”

Now Aldo runs this business on Route 88 and he has a lot full of old cars he’s going to restore. He’s always looking for new projects, always looking "to bring people’s dreams back to life," as he puts it. And sometimes he enlists the help of his fiancee. "She’s a wiz," said Aldo.

So in July, she’s online, scouring the postings on carfax.com, checking the VIN numbers and previous owners and so forth, and she comes across this ‘62 Chevy, a Bel Air, 2-door coupe. She shows it to Aldo. This is the car, the car he’d been hearing about ever since he started hanging out with Speedy.

"It’s like finding a needle in a haystack," Aldo says. Next thing he knew, he was driving up to Hamden, Connecticut, where the car was ‘just sitting there on a farm, rotting away.’

"Wouldn’t that be a great business to go into, finding people’s old cars for them?" he wondered. "It would be like finding a missing relative." Very true. There is always hope.

GM And UAW To Resolve Issues

On Monday, the United Auto Workers went on strike against General Motors because as UAW President Ron Gettelfinger puts it, they are pushed by the automaker into the decision.  According to Edmunds’ AutoObserver.com, Gettelfinger claimed that General Motors is turning their discussion into a "one way street" with the automaker  expecting the union to conform with their conditions and at the same time expecting that it need not give anything back.  Gettelfinger even said that they are under the impression that the automaker does not care if the union went on strike.  And strike they did. But now, fortunately, it seems that the union and the automaker has come to terms and are willing to sit  down again and talk about their issues.

The autochannel.com reported that Nick Carey and David Bailey writing for Reuters reported that the United Auto Workers and General Motors have reached a tentative contract on Wednesday.  The said contract ends the national strike of about 73,000 workers.  According to the report, the deal includes a groundbreaking health care trust fund. That is surely much important than Lexus floor mats.

Ron Gettelfinger said that the union members will resume working on General Motors assembly facilities Wednesday.  This announcement puts an end to the first strike against the Detroit automaker since 1970.  It is a good thing that this is resolved quickly.  As Michelle Krebs of Edmunds’ AutoObserver.com puts it: "A strike is good for no one: not for GM, the UAW, the Detroit area and other GM towns, nor the global economy. But, the economy and car market are relatively soft, and GM has a reasonable stockpile of inventory – companywide, the average is 87 days’ worth, above the industry norm of 60-65 days."

General Motors who owns Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Saturn, Cadillac, Daewoo, GMC, Holden, Hummer, Vauxhall, Saab, and Opel will benefit too from the agreement.  According to the automaker, the deal will increase their competitiveness in manufacturing. General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner admitted that the discussion is the most difficult in the history of the union and the automaker.  "There’s no question this was one of the most complex and difficult bargaining sessions in the history of the GM/UAW relationship," said Wagoner

The UAW is also happy with the deal.  Gettelfinger said:  "I think our retirees will be exceptionally pleased with this contract and for our active membership, there will be some changes, but overall they will be very, very pleased with the outcome of this negotiation and the job security that is associated with this."

How Speedy is the Chevy Volt?

We have all been waiting for the day when someone from General Motor speaks about the Chevy Volt. Now, the New York Times revealed the recent interview they had to Bob Lutz. The GM superstar released more updates about the upcoming electric-car from GM.

The Chevrolet Volt has been one among the most sought after GM car models and just before they released the new model, David Pogue of the New York Times had a chance to get to know the new car.

David Pogue of New York Times asked Bob Lutz, “So, what about torque and RPM? Is it all measured differently?”

Bob Lutz answered, “Yeah, batteries have tremendous performance and torque. Our performance targets for the Volt are 0 to 60 in around five or six seconds. Top speed of 120 miles an hour for a limited time. A hundred miles an hour is sustainable.”

Among the top speedy cars of Chevy is the new Volt which is capable of a 0-60 mph stint in 6 seconds. The electric Chevrolet Volt hybrid took its new features and performance from the current production BMW 335i or Infiniti G37. Then it will be more interesting.

However, the General Motors Corporation had a chance to correct what Lutz have misspoken. They have to visit gm-volt.com to tell followers that the car actually has 8.5 - 9.0 seconds and not the time Lutz has announced.

The Detroit based automaker will be producing 60,000 units of the Chevrolet Volt Hybrid this year. This is actually four times more than the first time Toyota brought the Prius in the US car market. Chevy also tagged the new Volt with a price of less than $30,000. That is I guess reasonable for a hybrid car, right?

Junior Tries 88

When Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced earlier this year that he will be leaving the team which his father started after this season, there have been many speculations. The most important issue was of course for what team Junior will be driving next season. That question was answered when Hendrick Motorsports announced that they have signed Junior to a contract. Then, there’s also the speculation of what would happen to Budweiser’s sponsorship of Junior.  That too was answered earlier this week when Budweiser announced that they have picked Kasey Kahne to be the new face of Budweiser in NASCAR.

Then, Junior announced that he will not be driving a car No. 8 this season since his stepmother did not approve of his idea that he will use the number when he move to another team.  After that announcement, there are speculations as to the design of the new car that Junior will drive next year.  The waiting is over since Hendrick recently unveiled Junior’s car for the 2008 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "The new look is relatively subdued compared to the bright red Earnhardt paraphernalia that currently fills NASCAR stands. In two versions of Earnhardt’s 88 Chevy car unveiled Wednesday, one had a green hood and roof top with the AMP logo in white, and the other the same design in blue with the National Guard logo in white. Both versions had white side panels, the ‘88′ in red on the side and black rear panels."

The number 88 has history behind it.  Other drivers who have used the number in the past include Junior’s grandfather, Ralph.  Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Bobby Allison and Buddy Baker all drove the number 88 car at one point in their career.  This season, the number 88 is being used by NASCAR veteran Ricky Rudd.  Rudd though will be retiring after this season and Hendrick, Junior, and NASCAR has reached an agreement for the mist popular driver in the sport today to use the said number.

Meanwhile, Junior had this to say:  "I was really trying to… do good by my fans because it was very important to them. That was one of the more popular questions: ‘Will it have an 8 in it?’ I think they can be twice as happy about the situation."  He added that:  "I like the fact that the number has some history, that makes me feel very proud to have it."

Defending Champ Looks For Consistency

Last year, Jimmie Johnson qualified for the Chase for the Nextel Cup. The first race in the "Chase" though saw Johnson finishing miserably at 39th place.  The second race was better for him as he finished 13th.  The third is not so good but he still managed to place 14th.  Then he finished 24th at the fourth race. At that point, I think there were few who believe that Johnson can rebound and take the championship.  But he did. He finished either first or second for the next five consecutive races and eventually took the Cup home.

This year, the defending champion is looking to be consistent. "Last year, I had a lot of bad races and then some other guys finally did, and that really dictates it," Johnson explained. "If we all come out of here with poor performances, it’s a wash and the next nine races following that dictates it, so it’s real tough to have a clear strategy. I think everyone’s strategy is to run top-five, top-10 and try to get maximum points. But we won’t know the hole that we’re in, or the advantage we may have, until we’re probably seven or eight races in. I think then you can formulate a strategy at that point. Until then, I think we’re all just out collecting points."

Johnson will be aiming to take a second championship this year onboard his Chevy car which is equipped with racing parts as reliable as the Saturn PCV valve. Meanwhile, his teammate Jeff Gordon expressed his thoughts on the Chase saying:  "Jimmie definitely proved last year that you should never give up. You just never know.  Somebody could put seven straight races together and then have three that go bad. But I think if somebody stays consistent they’re going to win it, no matter what the other guys do."

Jimmie Johnson finished just sixth at the first Chase event this season but his past performances makes him a dangerous threat to other drivers looking to take away his championship.

Be A Chevy Car Club Member

I cannot blame you if you go crazy over Chevy cars. We all know how gorgeous these cars are and they are just so hard to resist. I may not be wrong if I say you are one among those Chevy owners who actually took extra care of your cars. I mean, Chevy cars are not that easy to buy. You have to have at least more than a few extra dollars to buy an expensive Chevy radiator compared to a Mazda radiator although I have nothing against Mazda parts.

You may embrace the idea of being one among those Chevy enthusiasts. Well in my case, it is a must. Because I just love everything about Chevy cars. But how are you going to find a Chevy Car Club?

If you need to know more about Chevy cars, it is just but right for you to get connected with all the Chevy fans around the globe. Of course, you cannot get in touch with these fans daily. A mode called forums on the net can help you stay connected.

There are three reputable Chevy sites on the net. These are CarSpace.com, ChevyClub.com and CarClubs.com. These sites include all the Chevy models in your area.

You may need the old school way of looking at the Chevy enthusiasts in your area. Search at the local phone book about the clubs existing in your area and try to contact them one by one. Now, choose the right Chevy club for you. These clubs have meetings, gatherings and celebrations regarding Chevy and news about the car brand. Every gathering may entitle you an entrance fee which is just around one of the benefits you can get from being a member.

If you are not satisfied with these clubs, you can contact your dealership and ask help to locate an existing Chevy Car Club in your area.

Frustration

It’s what I feel and probably millions of other Junior fans out there.  For the second time in three years, Dale Earnhardt Jr. failed to qualify for the Chase for the Nextel Cup.  I thought that Jr. can win the last race before the Chase, the 2007 Chevy Rock & Roll 400. During the latter stages of the race, Junior is among the top drivers until fate intervened.  Or I guess it was just bad luck.  A very bad case of bad luck. With just five laps to go and Junior looking ready to finish at least in the top three, his car’s engine failed!

"We just haven’t been finishing races," said the most popular NASCAR driver today during the post-race interview.   "We’re running in the top five every week. We ain’t in the Chase. We deserve to be in the Chase. I wish we were for my fans. But we’ll give them something to cheer about. We race hard. We don’t quit. We love racing. That’s what we do. We’ll be all right. It’s just disappointing, man."

Going into the race, Jr. is given an almost impossible task for him to qualify for the Chase. He needed to erase Kevin Harvick’s 128 point-lead. Jr. can only get to the Chase if he finish not lower than fifth, lead the most laps which were given extra points, and have Harvick finish worse than 33rd. With that odds against him, Jr. proclaimed himself "the longest of long shots".

Come raceday, Jr. was ready. The Junior Nation is all pumped up, ready for Dale Jr. to put up an impressive race. Through the first half of the race, Jr. did not show any challenge for the win as he battles with the condition of his Car of Tomorrow.  His seat is killing is back. He kept complaining about this to cousin and crew chief Tony Eury Jr.  Halfway through the race, the problem was fixed, and Junior was bale to gain some ground on the leaders.  During Lap 242, Harvick’s car overheated thus giving Junior much hope.

This was the point where I was all pumped up. Ready to celebrate with the Junior Nation.  But then, at the end of the day, it was not meant to be. "We broke another motor, and they seem to fall apart when they plug ‘em into my car. I don’t know what it is about it, but we’ve had a good car all year long. It’s just really frustrating."

"These dang motors", added Jr.  I second the motion.

Chevy Cobalts To Compete At the Upcoming KONI Challenge

Are you an aficionado of those Chevy Cobalts? It seems that an air of positive vibe has been delighting your team. And you feel the bliss too.

As the 2007 KONI Challenge Series season winds down, the teams that run the Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged in the ST class have only two chances left to rack up additional wins against some of the world’s most competitive brands, Who Won reported. Although Miller Motorsports Park near Toole, Utah is one of the more challenging tracks on the circuit with 24 corners distributed throughout 4.5 miles, Jamie Holtom and Eric Curran who share the No. 01 Georgian Bay Motorsports/SCADAPack Cobalt have had success at the desert road course, with Holtom putting the car on the pole position in the series’ first-ever qualifying session there, the report added.

"Even though we’ve had several rule changes since the series last raced at Miller, we’re expecting to have a successful outing based on our performance there a year ago," said Dwight Woodbridge, KONI Challenge Series program manager for GM Racing. "It’s a technical track and that favors our cars and detail-oriented teams. It will be hot, no doubt, but probably no worse than at Barber Motorsports Park where our cars seemed to perform quite nicely despite the heat."

"That was a pretty phenomenal lap I put down here last year," said Holtom. "I think I managed to qualify a second ahead of the field. Hopefully we’ll be able to repeat that. With the long straightaways, the competition adjustments that Grand-Am has made have helped quite a bit, so we feel we’re more in contention than we were. I think with the combination of good high-speed handling - which is what Miller is all about - and the straight-line speed that the Cobalt has been able to improve on, I think we can do well."

At Barber Motorsports Park, Holtom and Curran inked their first win this season. They also held the pole position. From the previous race, aficionados should be feeling confident about the upcoming event.

"With the combined field, you don’t want to be passed by the leader if you’re not the first car in the ST field," explained Holtom. "Unless you’re leading the ST field, getting passed by the race leader is bad because if a full-course caution happens, you can end up a lap down. Then you’ll have to use pit strategy to your advantage to try and get back on the lead lap."

Kurt Kossmann will again co-drive the No. 53 Predator Auto Sport Chevrolet Cobalt. Two other Cobalt SS Superchargeds will join the event, the No. 138 GS Motorsports car of Gunter Schmidt, Andrew Danyliw and Steve Kent and the No. 06 Project Motorsports Cobalt of Derek DeBoer, Tom Smurzynski and Mallory Smurzynski.

The combined class KONI Challenge Series race is set on Friday, 14th of this month at 3:00 in the afternoon MDT and will run 200 miles (45 laps) or to a time limit of 2.5 hours.

Chevy wins the Nextel Cup Manufacturer’s Championship

Chevy was able to win the Nextel Cup Manufacturer’s Championship for the 31st time since 1952. The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at the Richmond International Raceway has been set to fire up when Jimmie Johnson won the 2007 Manufacturers’ Championship for Chevrolet in NASCAR’s premier division as released by Motorsport early this morning. After ten races, Chevy was able to get the award.

Too bad, they don’t use the Mercedes Benz washer pump but it was all worth it because of the 26 races, the different drivers were able to catch 19 victories for this season which also brought Chevrolet the award. These were the drivers that contributed to the victory of Chevy:

  • Jimmie Johnson (6)
  • Jeff Gordon (4)
  • Tony Stewart (3)
  • Kevin Harvick (1)
  • Denny Hamlin (1)
  • Kyle Busch (1)
  • Jeff Burton (1)
  • Casey Mears (1)
  • Martin Truex, Jr. (1)

This was the fourth consecutive time that Chevy was able to win the Nextel Cup Manufacturer’s title on the Nextel reign. This was perhaps the most famous racing series ever joined by Chevy. The car team was able to get a huge attention because of the 2007 Manufacturers’ Championship.

The Chevrolet general manager, Ed Peper, was quoted saying, "This has been a dream season for Chevrolet. We have won 19 Cup races so far this year. We have nine of the 12 drivers in the running for the NASCAR Nextel Cup title. And tonight we also want to congratulate Hendrick Motorsports and Jimmie Johnson for winning the Chevy Rock & Roll 400. Our success in NASCAR is a result of many hours of hard work and dedication from all the men and women on our Chevy race teams. We know that a strong performance in racing helps to generate the same strong performance in the marketplace, and we’re pleased with everyone’s efforts to keep the Chevy bowtie out front on and off the track."

The driver of the no. 48 Lowe’s Impala SS, Jimmie Johnson, also said, "We just had a solid effort all night. Parts of the race, especially the first two-thirds of it, we had a good car, maybe not the fastest car. We kept working on it and got our Impala SS right. I’m really proud we clinched this Manufacturers’ Cup for Chevrolet. I can’t believe we’ve clinched this early in the season. That’s phenomenal. I think it says a lot about the brand and the relationships with the teams have with GM and in particular with Chevrolet. With the new car coming on line with the Impala SS and to hit the ground running like we did to have the advantage that we did, says a lot about everybody’s commitment."
